Wedding Terminology

A Glossary of Wedding Terminology commonly used:

Processional: The group of people walking down the aisle in a specific order to mark the beginning of a wedding ceremony.

Recessional: The order in which the newlywed couple and wedding party exit the ceremony.

Cocktail Hour: The period of time between the ceremony and dinner often including drinks appetizers.

First Look: When a couple sees each other for the first time on their wedding day before the ceremony.

First Touch: The only difference is that the couple cannot see each other. Usually there is an object like a door that separates the pair, but they are still able to hold hands.

Boutonniere: A floral accessory worn on the lapel of a tux or suit jacket.

Unplugged Ceremony: A ceremony in which the couple requests that guests put away cell phones, cameras, and any other devices in order for them to be present in the moment.

Bustle: When the train of the wedding dress is buttoned up to floor length when before they enter the reception. Planner Tip: Have someone take a video on the bustle when you pick up the dress!

 HMUA: Hair and Makeup Artist

Shot List: The list of desired photos you would like the photographer or videographer to capture at your wedding events. Planner Tip: It is often so helpful to include names of family/friends that you want photos with as the photo/video team are often meeting them  for the first time on the wedding day. For Example: B & G plus Siblings: Sara, Michael, Lisa & Katie

Room Flip — Refers to when a room is completely transformed between the stages of a wedding or event. Planner Tip: Hire us so you don’t have to worry about this!

Escort Card — Escort cards direct guests to a table vs. a specific seat. Most often guests pick them up on the way into the reception. If the meal is plated the meal option would be designated often in the top corner.

Place Card —  Place cards show guests both a table and the specific seat they have been assigned. Traditionally, this means the reception is a more formal event with a served dinner option. The place card is at each place setting and designates each guests meal.

Votive  — Candle holders, usually in gold or silver. They are often added to guest or head tables for some extra decor.
